PROBLEM
The problem that I am highlighting is that there aren't enough sustainable businesses/establishments that give back to the community within Bournemouth.
PROCESS
I looked into the different user types that would relate to my chosen issue and I managed to link Gen Z to my problem as when researching them, I found that they are referred to as the 'sustainability generation'. By making them my target audience I allow them to boost awareness of this issue as this generation is very social, whether it is through social media or in person. So if I create a space for them to openly socialise in several forms it will boost the presence of sustainable buildings within the area.
PROPOSAL
The building I have created is a sustainable restaurant, cafe and bar for the young generation to use as a local hangout spot, revision space and to grab something to eat or drink. The whole building is run on solar power so it is eco-friendly and all the food within the establishment is locally sourced from sustainable and ethical sources, as well as the surrounding farms. So that the building is giving back to the community it will be donating a percentage of its profits at the end of every month to a sustainable charity.
SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability is a broad policy concept in the global public discourse that consists of three main "dimensions" or "pillars": environmental, economic and social. The original semantic meaning of “sustainability” and “to sustain” refers to the ability to continue over a long period.
CHOSEN USER TYPE
The user type I have chosen to aim for my project is the younger generation of the residents of Bournemouth. Now the majority of residents are aged 45-55,  but there is a growing younger generation that fluctuates throughout the year due to the local schools. I’ve chosen Generation Z as it includes children, teens, and young adults born between 1997 and 2012. It is the most racially, ethnically, and sexually diverse generation in history and it is the most influential generation as they’re commonly known for being on social media or buried in their electronic devices. However them being active online and constantly checking the new trends can excel in a business’s growth as the generation is always sharing new places, products and trends with each other through social platforms.
LOCATION
River Island is located prominently at 58 Commercial Road, a 0.11-mile distance northwest of the centre of Bournemouth (aside from Richmond Hill of A338 / Wessex Way). 56-58 commercial road is located in Bournemouth. A coastal resort town located on the south coast of England with Poole to the west and Christchurch to the East. In 2020 Bournemouth had a population of 506,000. It is part of the South East Dorset conurbation.

THE SITE
INTERIOR
The building is a framed building meaning it is made of beams and pillars and there are no supporting walls within the space. The general space has a modern contemporary design with large glazed features like windows and doors. the floors are concrete and there are no major structural elements but the main staircase and lift shaft.
EXTERIOR
The exterior of the building is a red brick, which can be changed as is it not structural it is decoration. There is a paved area outside the front of the building which can be utilised for temporary decorations.

PRECEDENTS

MAKING THE BUILDING SUSTAINABLE
I want the building to be sustainable so I will be adding a series of solar panels on the roof so that the building is using solar power instead of electricity, therefore helping the environment by reducing greenhouse emissions as well as saving money on electricity.
I will be installing Living green walls on each floor in different forms as they are capable of purifying the air, reducing and regulating the ambient temperature, promoting biodiversity in the community and creating a sense of well-being.
The building will be lit by LED light throughout and will be powered by solar panels. I’m opting for several automated lighting systems and motion sensor lights as this type of lighting can be controlled, remotely, or automatically.
COMMUNITY
So that the building gives back to the local community the restaurant will be donating a percentage of its profits at the end of every month to a charity within the community. As well as that, the food within the restaurant will be locally sourced from sustainable and ethical sources and the surrounding farms within the community.
