EXTENDING THE BUILDING OUT
To achieve an extension out over the edge of the building and give an overhang on the top 3 levels, a cantilever construction method will be adapted to the steel frame among the utilised floors.
Cantilever construction allows overhanging structures without additional supports and bracing. It is a rigid structural element that is supported at one end and free at the other. The cantilever beam can be either concrete or steel with one end cast or anchored to a vertical support. It is a horizontal beam structure whose free end is exposed to vertical loads. This structural element is widely used in the construction of bridges, towers, and buildings, and can add a unique beauty to the structure.
VOIDS
Floor voids within the top three floors open up the spaces so that they merge with each other. The top three floors will be comprised of a kitchen and dining area, general seating and social space as well as a quiet zone dedicated to mental health and wellbeing. the voids will help ventilate, let light through and create some interesting design focus points. Voids are not purely aesthetic, however. Multi-level dwellings without a void can feel somewhat divided into compartments; voids can create connection points throughout a space to bring people together.
In construction, a floor void is typically a vertical opening or hole that is left in the floor construction either to accommodate services, allow the installation of a staircase or as an aesthetic feature.
